AI image generators from text seem to be popping up everywhere these days. But just how good are they?
These AI tools use machine learning algorithms to generate images from text descriptions, making it possible to create images of objects and scenes. I wanted to know how good they are, so I decided to put a few to the test myself.
In this article, I’ll take you through some of the most popular AI image generator from text available today. I’m going to give each generator the same text “prompt” and we’ll see how each performs.
The prompt will be: Santa Claus on the beach drinking a cocktail in a realistic style. Because, why the heck not?
Let’s see just how good these tools are.
5 Popular AI image generator from text
In no particular order…
1. Picsart – Quick and easy AI image generator
Alrighty, let’s start with Picsart. I start by copying my prompt into the text box. I’m then asked to sign up for a free account before I can view the results. Thankfully, it’s just a click of the button as it’s connected to Gmail. Once that’s done. I’m presented with my results:
Hmmm, not quite what I imagined. Not sure why Santa has no legs. The cocktails are very random and out of proportion too…and I certainly don’t think this looks in any way realistic. There’s an option to view more results but you have to pay for it.
They have a yearly plan which will set you back $110 or a monthly plan at $16 month. They also offer a free trial for 7 days, but given these initial results, I think I’kk move onto the next AI image generator from text!
2. NightCafe – Create AI art in seconds
Let’s take a look at NightCafe now and see if they can do any better. Once again I paste in my prompt and hit generate. Here’s what NightCafe gave me:
Ok! This is much more along the lines of what I was expecting. I’m glad to see Santa has some legs now and a cocktail that is a little more in proportion. The style is more realistic too, which was part of my prompt. Overall, NightCafe has hit this one out of the park, though I’m not sure what’s going on with Santa’s chair.
Downloading my image isn’t an issue as NightCafe gives you a certain quota of free credits to use each day. However if you need to create a lot of images all at once, you may need to purchase more.
3. DeepAI – text to image generator
Next up we have DeepAI, a very popular AI image generator from text. After inputting the same prompt again, I take a look at what it comes up with.
Hmm ok. Santa looks like he’s a bit tipsy now doesn’t he? To me this doesn’t look realistic at all. I’m not sure what’s going on with Santa’s legs and I don’t know about you but I’ve never held a glass like that.
DeepAI gives you the option to ‘enhance’ the image but all that seems to do is make the image a bit sharper. Overall, I’m not so impressed with this tool. It’s definitely better than Picsart but nowhere near as good as NightCafe.
4. Canva – Free AI image generator
Canva is another popular platform that has jumped on the AI art generation bandwagon. To use their generator, start by telling them what you want to create (ie: instagram post, Facebook cover etc). For this one I just said a blank canvas 900 x 900.
Once you’ve set up the project you can then type in your prompt. I go ahead and give Canva mine, and am presented with four different options:
Once again, I’m not super impressed with these results. None of them are in the realistic style I asked for (aside for option 2 where Santa looks a tad creepy). The fourth option looks like it’s been made in Paint on a computer from the 90s.
You can hit ‘Create again’ in Canva if you want another lot of images, unfortunately when I did that I just got another bunch of very similar images to this lot. The good news is this tool is free to use in Canva, so if you’re not fussy about the results, this could be okay.
5. Wepik – Free text to image generator
Finally, let’s take a look at Wepik. Once again I’m asked to create a free account and I’m given 36 free credits. I copy and paste my prompt. This generator gives you the option to choose a style so I select ‘photo’ hoping it will be the most realistic. Here’s what Wepik produces:
Well, I can’t say these are super realistic either, though for the most part it seems to have followed the prompt otherwise. The second option, Santa Claus as a cocktail is an interesting interpretation.
I wonder what a Santa Claus cocktail would taste like? Candy canes and Christmas pudding? I sure don’t want to find out.
What else can you generate with AI?

Benefits of using an AI image generator from text
AI image generators from text offer a wide range of benefits:
Unleashing creative potential
AI image generators empower users to generate visually stunning content based solely on text descriptions. This capability opens up exciting creative possibilities in fields like graphic design, advertising, and entertainment. These areas usually require quick and efficient production of visuals, which is crucial.
Time and resource savings
By eliminating the need for manual image creation or extensive design skills, AI image generators save significant time and resources. They enable individuals with limited expertise to effortlessly produce high-quality visuals, streamlining the creative process and reducing production costs.
Democratizing the creative process
With AI image generators, the creation of high-quality visuals becomes accessible to a broader audience. Those without advanced design skills can generate impressive visuals by simply providing text descriptions. This democratization of the creative process promotes inclusivity and encourages diverse perspectives.
Promoting innovation through rapid prototyping
AI image generators facilitate rapid prototyping and iteration. Users can generate visuals based on textual feedback, allowing quick refinements and exploring different design concepts. This iterative approach fosters innovation, enabling users to experiment and evolve their ideas rapidly.
Enhanced accessibility and enjoyment
AI image generators make visual content more accessible and enjoyable for all. By simplifying the creation process, these tools enable a wider range of individuals to participate in producing high-quality visuals. This increased accessibility enhances the overall experience for creators and consumers alike.
Ethical considerations when using AI image generators from text
When using AI image generators from text, it is essential to consider the ethical implications associated with their implementation. Here are some key ethical considerations that should be taken into account:
Bias and fairness
AI models are trained on large datasets, which can introduce biases in the data. These biases may be reflected in the visual output when generating images from text. Ensuring that the training data is diverse and representative of different demographics is crucial to mitigate biases and promote fairness in the generated images. Regularly monitoring and evaluating the generated visuals can help identify and address any potential biases.
Privacy and data protection
AI image generators may require textual inputs, including personal or sensitive information. Organizations must handle and store this data securely, adhering to privacy regulations and ensuring that user consent is obtained. Safeguarding user privacy and protecting personal data should be a priority when implementing AI image generation systems.
Intellectual property and copyright
AI image generators have the potential to generate images that resemble existing copyrighted works. It is important to respect intellectual property rights and ensure that the generated visuals do not infringe upon copyrights or trademarks. Organizations and individuals should be mindful of using the technology responsibly and seek proper permissions or licenses when applicable.
Misuse and manipulation
AI image generators can be misused for unethical purposes, such as generating fake or misleading visuals. This raises concerns about misinformation, fraud, and the manipulation of digital content. Users and developers should be aware of the potential for misuse and take steps to mitigate these risks. Implementing safeguards, promoting digital literacy, and fostering transparency can help mitigate the negative impacts of AI-generated images.
Transparency and explainability
The inner workings of AI image generation models can be complex and opaque. To build trust and accountability, it is essential to strive for transparency and explainability in the technology. Users should clearly understand how the AI model operates, the limitations of the generated visuals, and any potential biases or uncertainties associated with the system.
Human oversight and responsibility
While AI image generators can automate visual creation, human oversight, and responsibility remain crucial. Humans should monitor and validate the generated images, ensuring they align with ethical standards and intended use cases. Humans should also intervene in cases where the generated visuals may have unintended consequences or violate ethical guidelines.
