What Are 70,000 Online Businesses Doing With AI That You Aren’t?

Over 1.5 million people use DALL-E, generating more than 2 million AI-powered images and artworks daily—a figure that continues to grow each month. It’s not just individual users driving this trend; a recent 2024 survey revealed that over 70,000 online businesses and brands rely on DALL-E to create unique imagery and visual content.

Why it matters

AI is prompting humanity to confront profound questions about our identity and purpose. Our use of tools like ChatGPT and DALL-E challenges us to consider questions such as: “If AI can write and create art, why should I bother to be a creator?” and “If AI is a creativity machine, what’s my role as an innovative human?”

This isn’t just a passing trend—it’s a generational shift. To navigate this new era, we must figure out how to collaborate and integrate AI into our creative processes. Artists, creators, and entrepreneurial minds need to embrace AI as a powerful tool for creativity and innovation, rather than resist its transformative potential.

Going deeper

In 2022, everything felt business as usual—Google reigned supreme as the go-to search engine for finding information.

By 2024, however, AI has revolutionized the landscape, empowering online businesses to elevate their creativity with tools, insights, and information that make innovation faster, easier, and more affordable. AI enables businesses to connect with audiences and deliver unique value propositions like never before.

The explosion of AI-generated images is just the beginning. In just two years since ChatGPT’s public launch and DALL-E’s debut on November 30, 2022, AI has expanded across all forms of media, including text, images, and video, transforming how we create and communicate.

And the latest numbers show that ChatGPT is now ahead of Google for attention and traffic supremacy as it approaches nearly 4 billion users per month

Google’s management team is now on code red! In nuclear and military terms Defcon 5! The battle is now on for survival for Google and to try and stop the arrival and expansion of OpenAI. The fight to be the global apex predator is now in full sight. Digital prairie dominance is up for grabs after a generation of Google.

The battle and the existential crisis for Google and its nearly $200 billion annual revenue rivers of gold and its $3 billion capital value will be fun to watch.

But there is something that is guaranteed. Nothing will ever be the same again.

It is not only an information battle cry that has been called but a creativity challenge that questions our humanity as the innovating and tool making species.

How does one define creativity?

The Cambridge Dictionary defines creativity as “the ability to produce or use original and unusual ideas.” This highlights two key elements: “ideas” and “produce.”

An idea is simply a thought—intangible and unseen. On its own, it doesn’t create impact; it’s merely the beginning. Production, on the other hand, transforms the invisible into something tangible and real. To truly change the world, creativity requires both—a spark of inspiration and the action to bring it to life.

Dreams are wonderful, but nothing happens until you take action.

The creativity challenge

The greatest obstacle to creating an original idea and producing something truly unique is often rooted in our own history and upbringing.

From an early age, we are shaped by our parents, culture, and religion. Society and our peers impose expectations, pressuring us to conform and fit in. Instead of seeking originality or meaning, we find ourselves simply following the path of compliance.

If we truly examine ourselves, the majority of the thoughts that arise in our heads are in other people’s voices. The voices of our parents and our teachers. The books we read, the TV we watch – the cumulative mental product of ten thousand years of a post-nomadic, calorie-dense culture. Our thoughts are built on top of a very deep and sticky cultural substrate” – Goutham Kurra, What AI Can Teach us about being Human

I also often feel that there is something greater within all of us to produce our best potential.

But breaking free from the calcified training and conditioning of our lived-in and baked environment and surrounding society and culture feels like trying to break free of the mud and the life “mold” that holds us in standing still and traps us in fixed thinking.

Our cognitive biases are our subjective reality, and they are hard to break free from.

So how do you unearth the creativity that lies within all of us in its different levels of innate ability we were born with? Finding the genius in the DNA we inherited.

It needs nurture and it needs breaking.

How do you nurture creativity?

One way is to take a look at the genius creators that inspired us from centuries ago.

Leonardo da Vinci: Leonardo da Vinci epitomizes the Renaissance ideal of the polymath, a person whose expertise spans a significant number of different subject areas. Known primarily for his art, including masterpieces like “Mona Lisa” and “The Last Supper,” da Vinci also excelled in science, mathematics, engineering, anatomy, geology, and cartography.

His detailed notebooks, filled with scientific diagrams, anatomical sketches, and engineering designs, reveal a spirit of scientific inquiry and mechanical inventiveness that were centuries ahead of his time. Leonardo’s life reminds us that creativity can traverse disciplines, enhancing each with innovative insights.

His method of nurturing creativity can be broken down into the following:

  1. Polyphasic sleep: Leonardo reportedly followed a polyphasic sleep pattern, taking short naps throughout the day to maximize productive waking hours, though evidence for this remains anecdotal.
  2. Note-taking and journaling: He carried notebooks everywhere, recording ideas, sketches, scientific observations, and reflections, creating a vast archive of creative and intellectual work.
  3. Continuous learning and experimentation: Leonardo spent his time dissecting cadavers, studying natural phenomena like flight, and designing innovative machines, always exploring new disciplines.
  4. Varied work hours: He worked intensely when inspired, often for long, uninterrupted periods, but balanced this with shifts to other projects or rest when needed.
  5. Physical activity and diet: Leonardo prioritized his health, following a vegetarian diet and staying active, which he believed supported his creativity and well-being.
  6. Social interactions: Collaborating with patrons, other artists, scientists, and students in his workshop provided fresh ideas and inspiration, enhancing his multidisciplinary pursuits.

But nurturing creativity is not one size fits all and your way of nurturing creativity will be different to someone else.

Your routine will be different.

It’s innate and human to be creative

Humans are innately creative but the inspiration is often buried by parents, culture, and society by another innate human trait – The need to conform.

  • How do we let the imagination free?
  • How do we nourish unique ideas and combinations that surprise and open new worlds?

There’s no straightforward formula for creativity—it often emerges from chaos, the art of connecting seemingly unrelated ideas.

It requires openness: to exploration, to the joy of discovery, and to combining different pieces of information and perspectives. It also demands courage: the willingness to fail, to step out of your comfort zone, and to break free from the boundaries that limit us.

As Thomas A. Edison famously said, “To have a great idea, have a lot of them.” Edison himself failed 2,774 times before finally inventing the lightbulb

7 Steps to nurture your creativity

Many of us have a passion and curiosity about what interests us. We not only need to embrace what we love doing but to succeed we need to “fall in love with the process”.

We need to lean into the daily practice and ritual of creation.  Creativity is hackable and available to everyone.

Here are the 7 steps for cracking the creativity code:

  1. Preparation – Creative inspiration doesn’t arise from a vacuum and the first step is immersing yourself in your subject matter, researching your creative category and what surrounds it. “Inspiration is 99% perspiration and 1% inspiration.” – Thomas Edison
  2. Incubation – Stepping back and let the subconscious and intuition.

  3. Illumination – The “aha” moment where creative breakthrough occurs.
  4. Production – Now it’s time to create and bring forth your art.
  5. Verification – This stage is where you test your art and creation amongst a test group.
  6. Validation – Then it is let into the wild for the world to see and to experience your creation.
  7. Iteration – For the business artist this is where the product continues to be improved. For the painter, photographer and musician it is time to reflect about your next project and what you learned in the production process and the feedback.

But maybe the essence of nurturing creativity is to have some fun.

Creativity is intelligence having fun.” – Albert Einstein.

Going deeper

Let’s delve deeper into these seven steps.

Step 1: Preparation

Creative inspiration doesn’t arise from a vacuum and the first step is immersing yourself in your subject matter, researching your creative category and what surrounds it.

Preparation also involves identifying constraints, limitations, and available resources.

This stage is essential because it provides the raw materials and context necessary for the creative mind to start working on.

Step 2: Incubation

Artists, content creators and the business artists (Entrepreneurs) all need a period of incubation, during which they step away from the problem or project.  Incubation is a subconscious phase where the mind continues to process the gathered information and ideas. It is often in this stage that the subconscious mind works its magic, leading to “aha moments” and unexpected solutions.

Step 3: Illumination

The Illumination stage is when the creative breakthrough occurs. It’s the moment when a novel idea or solution suddenly comes to the forefront of the individual’s consciousness.

This stage can be marked by a sudden burst of inspiration, a creative insight, or a “Eureka!” moment.

It often feels like a shift from confusion to clarity, as the individual sees connections or possibilities they hadn’t seen before.

Illumination can be triggered by the subconscious processing that occurred during the Incubation stage.

It’s essential to capture these moments when they happen, as they are often fleeting and can lead to significant creative progress.

Step 4: Verification

The verification stage is where the creative idea or solution is evaluated, refined, and tested for its viability and effectiveness. After a test production, the creative output is often presented to an audience or stakeholders for feedback and evaluation. This stage may lead to further refinements or iterations based on the input received.

This stage involves critical thinking, analysis, and practical considerations.

Creatives must assess whether the illuminated idea aligns with the initial problem or goal and if it is a feasible and valuable solution.

If necessary, the idea may undergo further iterations and adjustments to enhance its practicality and relevance.

Verification ensures that the creative output meets the intended objectives and can be effectively implemented.

Step 5: Production

Once the creative idea has been verified and refined, it is translated into a concrete form.

This is the stage where the creative work is physically created, whether it’s writing a book, painting a picture, designing a product, or implementing a solution.

Step 6: Public validation

You can test your creativity in small audience samples but the real test comes when you share your creative art, product and production with the world.

Validation and affirmation that comes from this is important as it becomes a primary motivator.

Step 7: Reflection and iteration

Creatives often engage in reflection and iteration throughout the process and after the presentation and feedback stage. They will revisit their work, make improvements, and continue to refine their creative ideas.

These stages in the creative process do not always follow a linear or predictable sequence.

Creativity is a dynamic and messy process, and individuals may move back and forth between these stages as they work on their projects or tackle complex problems.

Despite humans seeming to have a monopoly on creativity, AI can facilitate creativity in ways that are now surprising us and asking the question of what it really means to be human. The AI machine is asking big questions of humanity. This includes “If AI can write for me, create a stunning image in seconds why do I bother as a human to create?

It is an existential crisis. But is there another way to look at this? Not AI as a replacement but as an assistant?

10 Ways AI can amplify, accelerate innovation and creativity

In March 2016, Google DeepMind’s AI program, AlphaGo, played a 5-game match against Lee Sedol, one of the world’s best Go players.

Go” is an ancient board game significantly more complex than chess, with an immense number of possible moves (more than atoms in the observable universe). Its reliance on intuition and creativity made it long thought impervious to AI dominance.

Lee Seedol was the world champion and won the first game. But in the second game there was a move by AlphaGo (The AI machine)  that looked like a mistake amongst the game’s professionals that astonished observers. It was later titled “Move 37: The “Beautiful” Move, which placed a stone in an unexpected location; it initially looked like a mistake. However, it turned out to be a deeply strategic and innovative move that helped AlphaGo win the game.

Human commentators described it as “alien” and “beautiful,” showcasing creativity and intuition—traits previously thought to be uniquely human.

AI is crucial in 2024 for assisting online businesses in becoming more creative because it combines efficiency with innovation, empowering businesses to stay competitive in a dynamic digital landscape.

Here’s why AI plays a pivotal role as it can empower:

1. Content generation at scale

  • AI tools can generate text, images, videos, and even audio content, reducing the time and resources needed for creative production. This enables businesses to experiment with diverse ideas and formats without a heavy investment.

2. Personalization

  • AI can analyze customer data to create highly personalized marketing messages and products, making content more engaging and relevant. This enhances customer experience and brand loyalty.

3. Idea enhancement

  • AI tools like ChatGPT can brainstorm and refine creative ideas, providing novel angles or insights that a human team might overlook. This collaboration between humans and AI drives innovation.

4. A/B testing automation

  • AI can generate multiple variations of ads, emails, or product descriptions and test them in real time to determine what resonates best with the target audience.

5. Visual and video creativity

  • AI-powered design tools (e.g., Canva AI, DALL-E, and Runway) allow businesses to create professional-grade visuals and videos. They enable small teams to produce high-quality assets without requiring expensive software or specialists.

6. Efficient resource utilization

  • By automating repetitive tasks, AI frees up creative teams to focus on high-value activities like strategy and storytelling, enhancing the overall creative process.

7. Market trend analysis

  • AI can analyze trends, customer feedback, and competitors to provide insights into what’s working in the industry. This helps businesses stay ahead by tailoring their creative strategies accordingly.

In summary, AI empowers online businesses to amplify their creativity by providing tools and insights that make it easier, faster, and more affordable to innovate, connect with audiences, and deliver unique value propositions in 2024’s competitive digital market.

The top 3 ways AI enhances human creativity

We need to keep in mind that as AI is really the digital collection, storage, curation and distillation of 100 Billion humans that have lived over the millennia and that knowledge and creativity is captured in “Large Language Models” software and resides in large data centers and is not creative in its own right.

AI enhances human creativity by acting as an amplifier of our abilities, not as a replacement. While AI is fundamentally a tool that collects, curates, and distills human knowledge and creativity, it serves as a catalyst for human innovation. Here are the top 3 ways AI enhances creativity:

1. AI as a creative co-pilot: Sparking and enhancing ideas

One of the best things about AI creative apps (video and image) and ChatGPT is that it breaks down creative blocks and walls that many of us are trapped behind. We slip into what we know and the frameworks that feel safe from past use and habit.

What it does:
AI generates ideas, suggestions, and prototypes based on massive datasets of prior human creativity. By providing options, frameworks, and prompts, AI helps individuals overcome creative blocks and explore new directions.

How it enhances creativity:

  • Brainstorming: AI tools like ChatGPT, MidJourney, or DALL·E can generate ideas or variations that spark new thoughts, acting like an unlimited brainstorming partner.
  • Idea Expansion: If you provide a seed of an idea, AI can help refine or expand it with unexpected possibilities that you may not have considered.
  • Rapid Prototyping: Creators can iterate on designs, writing, or visuals at a speed previously unimaginable, accelerating innovation.

Human’s role:
Humans curate, interpret, and refine AI’s output, selecting ideas that align with their unique vision, taste, and intent.

Example:
A writer uses AI to explore different story directions. AI offers possible twists, themes, or structures, but the writer filters and develops these into something unique and personal.

2. AI Automates the mundane, frees humans for the creative

It’s hard to be creative when you are in the mud of the mundane.

The mundane for me is doing bookkeeping, creating processes for better productivity and other stuff. The factory store floor or the office cubicle cell is not where inspiration or innovation flourishes.

What it does:
AI handles repetitive, tedious, and time-consuming tasks like data processing, formatting, and organizing, allowing humans to focus on higher-level creative thinking.

How it enhances creativity:

  • Focus on Strategy and Big Ideas: AI removes creative “busy work,” enabling individuals to direct energy toward ideation, experimentation, and refinement.
  • Augmented Production: With AI automating tasks like editing, resizing, or drafting, creators can produce more at scale while maintaining quality.
  • Streamlined Collaboration: AI tools facilitate collaboration (e.g., idea sharing, workflow management), enabling creative teams to work more efficiently.

Human’s role:
By outsourcing mundane work to AI, humans can dedicate their cognitive and emotional resources to meaningful, high-value innovation.

Example:
A graphic designer uses AI tools like Adobe Firefly or Canva AI to automate resizing and variations of visuals, freeing them to focus on crafting a brilliant concept or narrative.

3. AI Expands creative horizons through exploration and accelerated discovery

In 1995, I discovered the web browser, and it was a game-changer. No more driving to the library only to find the book I needed was loaned out or heading to the bookstore just to learn the book I wanted was out of stock. Suddenly, information was just a click away.

The internet and the web reduced distance and friction for gaining knowledge and accelerated learning and innovation by providing resources.

AI has taken the game to another level. We not only have information but we have distillation and answers.

Accelerated discovery and an insightful and intelligent curation of resources ready to use.

What it does:
AI explores vast datasets, patterns, and styles to reveal novel combinations, insights, and connections that humans may not have seen or imagined.

How it enhances creativity:

  • Cross-Disciplinary Inspiration: AI can pull ideas from different domains, sparking unexpected creative synergies.
  • Breaking Patterns: By offering unconventional or counterintuitive solutions, AI challenges human biases and comfort zones.
  • Access to Infinite References: Creators can instantly access knowledge, visual styles, or cultural data to inspire new work.

Human’s role:
Humans are the final creative arbiters. While AI can reveal possibilities, it’s the human who decides which ideas are worth pursuing, adapting, or refining.

Example:
A musician uses AI tools to analyze rhythms or melodies from different global genres, combining them in innovative ways to produce a unique sound.

How to unlock and amplify and accelerate creativity with AI

Creativity is unique to humans and what makes us human. But AI is challenging that assumption. But keep in mind that AI is a global database of all recorded human knowledge, creative output and distilled wisdom across all media that can be remixed into new creative combinations. The machine isn’t creative but a mixing machine of human thought.

AI’s role in making us more creative sometimes feels like AI stole our minds. But in reality it is tapping into the global supermind.

The key to unlock the door

As I reflect I am realizing that AI is the key to open the door to a brave new world we haven’t been able to imagine.  The exploratory play with AI allows my thoughts to spin between its opportunity, the challenges  and chaotic disruption.

What could it do?

It’s infinite and we are at the edge of a shattering. It can open a door to an unfettered imagination powered by AI. And here are two ways it can do that.

1. Break and shatter paradigms that disrupt the binds of fixed minds

It opens our consciousness and creativity to brave and new frontiers. Architecture, imagery and insights and much more. All you have to do is experiment and enter a description into an A.I. platform and see what design and content unfolds.

This detailed description for a building design at an architecture firm was tapped into the AI platform MidJourney.org:

“Low rise parametric building biophilic reference sheet 3d plans sections elevations construction details annotations callouts axis dimensions visual coding“.

This description was enabled by a skilled architect that knows the language of the discipline  and has the words to unlock the answer.

So it produced some magic.

2. It scales our umanity

AI will free us from mundane research. We will be able to use words as raw clay and shape and shake them to make something new and broken and ready for remaking.

In new combinations.

What was done in a day is now completed in an hour. I am more than happy to let the grunt work be done by the robot and then I can wrap it in my own human creativity with stories, experience and insights.

Artificial Intelligence is the code to a new creative future

In a blind test humans chose both poetry and images generated by AI in preference to human produced art.

Some recent research shows us why we need to adapt and evolve and consider AI as a tool and not a dystopian threat.

A recent blind test conducted by Astral Star Codex with the participants slightly preferring the AI creations to human ones, with six of the top ten most-liked images being AI-generated, and the top two slots going to the AI paintings.

AI generated poetry is indistinguishable from human written poetry and is rated more favourably according to Scientific Reports.

Who are the Artists testing the boundaries of AI and human creativity?

Artist Refik Anadol uses machine learning algorithms to create stunning visual art installations that incorporate data from various sources like weather data, city traffic patterns, or social media feeds.

His project “Melting Memories” combined data from EEG recordings that capture brainwaves of people recalling memories, which he then visualized as dynamic artworks displayed on large LED screens. This melding of neuroscience, data art, and architecture invites viewers to witness the stunning beauty of human cognition and memory, visualized by AI.

Refik Anadol Studios

So what does a world of artificial intelligence look like when we ask it to produce some ideas and content?

It can:

  • Open different perspectives that I need to escape my current limited mindset
  • Produce strange and unexplored combinations that I can’t unlock but I’m looking for the code
  • It seeks and finds soaring imagination that has been freed from the box of the past

Those unlocked insights are the escape hatch to exciting innovations. The challenge though is getting past our lifetime of programming.

Escaping our history.

The difficulty lies, not in new ideas, but in escaping from the old ones.” — John Maynard Keynes

The short term AI future

The current trending future is looking like Agentic AI. AI agents that take an idea and act on it. Like building a website.

AI Agents are now gaining traction and looking like they are the next big thing that will transform businesses. They not only create but take action on your behalf. Google has just announced its first AI agent platform.

The bottom line

Homo sapiens have always been tool makers that started with fire and stone axes and today we have built a global machine that is the mother of all tools. And it can help us be smarter, wiser, more productive and enhance and amplify our creativity.

The only way we will know how to apply it is to test, trial and use the machine’s features that are growing day by day.

We can’t ignore AI and embracing it as an assistant and co-pilot is where we need to start.
